The authors discuss the difference between the structural design and the operational safety of an aerodynamic groove and an aerostatic groove for double steering slip ring seals. The results show that the maximum gas film stiffness and working safety can be obtained by using a symmetrical groove with a wedge angle of about 15 ° and a curved bottom.
