The nonlinear biomechanical properties of ligaments and tendons are well designed to guide synovial joints to move easily and smoothly,to transfer the large forces generated by muscles tobones and alsotolimit excessive bone to bone displacement when the external applied loads are higher in order to protect other soft tissues in and around the joints from damages. As such, these tissues experience large, repetitive forces during sports and work-related activities and are injured frequently, especially those of the knee and shoulder joints.
