胡林翼(1812—1861),字贶生,号润芝,出生于湖南益阳一官僚地主家庭,1835年中举,翌年成进士,1846年报捐知府,分发贵州,历署安顺、镇远、思南三府知府,1851年补黎平知府,升贵东道。在黔凡七年,“捕盗安民”卓见成效,名声大起。1853年底应湖广总督吴文镕奏调,率黔勇600人赴鄂,欲与西征太平军抵敌,赴鄂途中,吴文鎔败死,胡林翼留湖南,后随曾国藩湘军东征。太平军再度攻入湖北,已是湖北按察使的胡林翼率军回救,武汉失守,原巡抚死,1855年4月胡林翼奉旨署湖北巡抚。他督军攻武汉,次年底克之,并迅速肃清鄂境,旋被补授湖北巡抚,从此实权在握,进入一生事业的顶峰时期,他经营湖北,充实湘军,督师东征,在湘军镇压太平天国过程中,起了重要作用。1861年9月30月,他咯
