In the 1920s and before, Shanghai’s cinemas were mainly located in Hongkou and its vicinity north of Suzhou Creek. The main reason was that Hongkou’s location advantage and the construction of the U.S. concession made the area worthy of prime location and multicultural immigrant society Features. The scale of the new cinema signifies a new stage in the development of the entertainment industry in Shanghai and a proof of the evolution of the demand for Hongkou land from a single orientation of trade functions to a comprehensive orientation of urban functions.
