虚谷是中国近代“海派”的艺术大师,在海内外卓有声誉。要真正懂得虚谷书画的鉴定,最好深入了解其生平和艺术,并由此涉入其作品之鉴定。虚谷的生卒年我一直采用(1824-1896午)73岁说,而非简单地以画家书款纪年为唯一依准,所以我以虚谷1823年生,卒年74岁为另一说,而认为73岁更可靠。此说拟撰另文重作新考。当然生年持1824年或1823年,于其书画鉴定并无大碍,但虚谷晚年记年中确曾将自己的年岁多长一岁。但见有虚谷75岁之作,那就必伪无疑了。虚谷是一位带有传奇性的画家。从他肖像画之水准,可知是写真高手,加之透
