Due to the lack of statistics, how many computer talents our country needs to cultivate before 2000 is a difficult problem. Here is a simple estimate, and suggest some solutions. Take a look at the estimation of the number of computer personnel in the United States and Japan in the early 1980s. The United States claims to have 1.2 million software tutors and 900,000 in Japan. If foreign-based hardware personnel make up one-fourth of the software population, the total number of software and hardware personnel in the United States is estimated at 1.5 million and Japan has about 1.1 million. If we assume that the scale of computer application and production in China in 2000 approached that of Japan in the early 1980s, then it is estimated that about 1 million people will need hardware and software in 2000 in our country. If according to foreign practice, half of them are equivalent to half a million university graduates or college graduates, and the other 500,000 people are equivalent to secondary school graduates.
