Astrocytes are the most abundant glial cells in the human brain and are thought to play a very important role in the physiology and pathology of the central nervous system (CNS). Astrocytes may be converted to reactive astrocytes after traumatic brain injury. Although the specific role of reactive astrocytes in craniocerebral trauma has not yet been fully elucidated, there is evidence that It has a huge effect on brain function. This article reviews the function of astrocytes in normal CNS and its role in traumatic brain injury.
