清嘉庆二十五年(1820年),林则徐被任命为江南监察御史,巡视江南各地。他到澎湖群岛寓所刚歇下,有个自称“花农”的人献上一盆玫瑰花,还说是要请林大人换个大盆栽花。林则徐心知有异,一脚踢翻花盆,盆里现出一个红包。包里是一只足有半斤重的金老鼠和一纸信笺,笺上写着:“林大人亲收,张保敬献。”林则徐当场将张保行贿的金老鼠没收,上缴国库。道光十九年(1839年),林则徐赴广州查禁鸦片。5月间,英国商务代表义律请林则徐到他的私邸参加宴会,并将一只精致方盒捧送给林则徐:“请大人笑纳我们的小小见面礼。”
