Although hepatitis B virus infection is associated with the recently discovered e antigen (eAg), it differs from HBS Ag in immunological and physico-chemical properties. The authors further confirm that eAg can be detected in the cytoplasm of hepatocytes of eAg-positive HBS Ag carriers. The liver specimens from 3 chimpanzees and 15 human chronic HBS Ag carriers were detected. The biopsies from 3 HBS Ag negative chimpanzee normal liver tissues and 4 HBS Ag negative chronic active hepatitis patients were used as controls. RESULTS: None of the control biopsy specimens were positive for HBSAg, HBC Ag, or eAg; all 13 liver biopsy specimens from human and chimpanzee HBS Ag carriers detected HBS Ag in hepatocytes or on hepatocyte membranes; serum HBS Ag and eAg were positive Seven patients and three chimpanzees found eAg in their cytoplasm of liver cells; HBS Ag-positive ones that did not detect eAg and e-antibodies in serum (anti-e)
