品钦的代表作《万有引力之虹》通过构建诸多二元对立,揭示了当作为生产力的科学技术上升为一种控制人类的方法时便成为危害社会的技术至上主义。从自然之虹与人造之虹、决定论与概率论、科技崇拜与情感守护以及死亡废墟与自然生命力等四组对立,就足以管窥科技崇拜给现代社会带来的生存悖论。品钦选取的万有引力之虹,一为自然之虹,一为人造之虹,前者代表着人类的希望和理想,后者代表着希望和理想的幻灭。万有引力之虹这个象征性的符号高度概括了绝望与希望、奴役与反抗、情感与科技等并存的社会现实,表现科技时代人类生活的荒诞以及对这种生活的反抗和期冀,充分体现出品钦对人类社会现状深切的人文关怀。
