明永乐皇帝朱棣于永乐四年(1406年)“诏建北京宫殿”,于一四二○年建成。当时营建紫禁城的工程是结合北京建都的工程进行的。元大都南城墙本来在现在的长安街,被移到现在的前门、宣武门、崇文门一线。既建皇宫又建北京,这样大的工程,《明史》说是“动以百万之众”,集中了全国的人力、物力、财力。在动工前就已派遣各部官员分头到川、广、云、贵、湘、晋各省采集大木,还征调了全国工匠、民工,甚至还调来军工。当时北京成了一片巨大的施工现场。比较大的工地有如下几处:台基厂,堆放柴薪及芦草。神木厂,堆放巨木。大木厂,存放由通州运河运来的大木。
