The c-erbB2/neu gene encodes a transmembrane protein p185-neu/c-erb2 with tyrosine protein kinase activity. It is highly homologous to the epidermal growth factor (EGF) receptor gene product. Like the EGF receptor gene, the c-erbB 2/neu gene product also plays an important role in cell growth and differentiation signaling. The rearrangement and overexpression of this proto-oncogene is closely related to the malignant transformation of cells and various tumors such as breast cancer and ovarian cancer.
