In October 1996, the inspection group of Fujian Textile Industry Design Institute visited Myanmar for its on-the-spot inspection of the textile industry market. The inspection team consisted of Dai Guorong, Lin Yuankun, He Shumin, and Gao Hongguang. Textiles, food and other industries have complementary advantages with me. My tour group did not see a decent factory along the 1300-kilometer journey in Myanmar. The friends of Myanmar who are traveling with each other understand that the answer is that there is almost no industry in Myanmar. Myanmar is located on the Indo-China peninsula on the eastern shore of the Indian Ocean, adjacent to China’s Yunnan Province and south to Thailand. Most of the country is in a tropical rainforest climate. Plants flourish, rice grains are cooked three times a year, and their products are abundant. From Yangon to the plains of the central city of Mandalay, planted sugarcane grows. The variety is not as good as sugarcane in the southern part of our province, but from the perspective of its planting area, there is still sugar industry. We understand that there are two sugar mills in Myanmar, but the equipment is obsolete and the production capacity is low. Two-thirds of the country’s sugar demand must be imported from neighboring countries, India. The gap between supply and demand is huge and the price is high.
