2008年4月,《小康》杂志联合新浪网,会同有关专家及机构,对我国“生命小康”进行了调查。经过对调查结果进行加权处理,并参照国家有关部门的监测数据和大量社会信息,得出中国生命小康指数为72.2分,比上一年增加0.4分。生命小康指数主要从居民健康满意度、居民健康水平、居民健康保障和措施等三个方面来衡量。其中,居民健康水平指标包括:平均预期寿命、孕产妇死亡率、婴儿死亡率,被称为居民健康的“三大指标”;居民健康保障和措施指标包括:卫生总费用占GDP的比例、每千人口医院卫生院床位、城镇居民基本医疗保险覆盖率、新型农村合作医疗参合率等。
