南京地處長江下游,北控江淮,南接三吳,龍蟠虎踞,地勢險要。歷史上從三國孫權時起,先後有東晋、宋、齊、梁、陳、南唐、明初、太平天國和中華民國等建都於此,是我國著名的四大古都(西安、洛陽、北京、南京)之一。如果從公元前四七二年越國大夫范蠡築越城算起,那麼南京有城的歷史已有二四五五年之久了。但就氣勢和規模來說,歷代築城莫過於明初。
