Acid leaching, descaling and chemical cleaning are the major processes by which metals corrode acid environments. In these cases, organic corrosion inhibitors are commonly used. This article discusses some of the problems associated with the industrial use of these corrosion inhibitors. The practical properties of pure corrosion inhibitor components can be obtained through the preliminary analysis of some typical parameters. In this way, the refractive index, specific gravity, viscosity measurements at different temperatures are presented, and useful identification can also be obtained from both IR and UV recordings as well as gas chromatographic analysis. For organic nitrogen-containing corrosion inhibitors, colorimetric methods for the determination of the concentration of active compounds have been proposed.
