In cardiopulmonary bypass, a moderate hypothermia cardioplegia perfusion model was used to study the formation and prevention of cardiac calcium-induced cardiocerebral injury. The authors found that despite the use of moderate hypothermia with collateral blood supply from non-coronary arteries (providing trace amounts of calcium), abnormal calcium damage still develops and the addition of trace amounts of calcium or the calcium antagonist diltiazem is effective in preventing this damage. MATERIALS AND METHODS Three groups of experimental dogs (6 in each group) received cardiopulmonary bypass through the mid-incision of the sternum and femoral artery and superior and inferior vena cava into the ascending aorta. During 4.5 hours of cardiac arrest, each experimental dog received one
