中国画色彩观因重视人的主观情感而更符合艺术创作的规律。而西方的绘画,从古典主义以物体的固有色作为色彩依据,到印象主义的更加注重光影,环境色,到现代的一些画派,绘画色彩世愈来愈个性化,更加随意。从毕加索,马蒂斯,克里姆特等西方绘画大师的作品中的色彩可以明显看见受中国绘画色彩观念的影响。西画的引入和传播,使接受了西画色彩观念的中国画家特别是工笔画家的用色观上产生了变化。西画对中国工笔画色彩的影响,其意义在于增强了工笔画色彩的表现力,扩展了工笔画的空间,推动了中国工笔画的复兴和发展。
