New Zealand’s first New Zealand Airlines picture was taken in the mid-1950s and since the 1970s New Zealand has received low-resolution data from NOAA polar orbiting satellites and geostationary satellites and is being used by the New Zealand Meteorological Service. At present, there is no direct Earth resources satellite ground station to access and receive high-resolution data. High-resolution data from Landsat 1, 2 and 3 of the 1970s and 1980s can only be obtained by means of an on-board tape recorder. Since 1989, some terrestrial satellite TM data have been acquired through relay satellites. In the 1990s, the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR) received NOAA data from the New Zealand Sea twice a day for collection and filing. A small amount of image data, including thermal capacity detectors, coastal color scanners and Space Shuttle Imaging Radar B, were also obtained from other Earth resources satellites.
