Bacterial adhesion to the surface of intraocular lens can be the cause of intraocular lens inflammation after cataract surgery. In this study, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa were observed by light microscopy and electron microscopy in polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) artificial lens group (control group), PMMA artificial lens plus heparin solution group (P <0.01). The results showed that the number of bacterial adhesion of the IOL group and the HSM group was significantly less than that of the control group (P <0.01). Heparin inhibits bacterial adhesion due to a hydrophobic layer on the surface of bacteria and intraocular lenses, so heparin can reduce the incidence of endophthalmitis after intraocular lens surgery
