刘永福,名义,字渊亭,广西钦州人。公元1837年10月出生在一个贫苦农民家庭,曾当过雇工和带引水路的滩师。刘永福青年时代,正是太平天国革命运动蓬勃发展的时期。饱受清朝政府压迫和地主阶级剥削的刘永福,毅然投身于反抗清朝统治的洪流。1857年,刘水福参加广西农民起义军。1865年,刘永福率领队伍参加吴亚忠所领导的起义队伍,先任前敌先锋,后为左翼大帅。刘永福有勇有谋,曾多次立下战功。
