《上海女孩》讲述的是一对上海亲姐妹珍珠和梅的故事,但作品人物对这个故事的理解完全不同于作者的设计。珍珠和梅历史意识淡薄,在她们的眼里,作品讲述的是她们之间本质上非历史性的姐妹情。相反,对作者邝丽莎来说,作品深具历史内涵,姐妹俩的故事其实是由历史语境和历史事件决定的。为了把姐妹情的故事变成历史小说,作者一方面把姐妹俩置于1937年至1957年期间的历史语境之中,迫使她们经历这期间中国和美国的历史事件,另一方面又巧妙地设计了珍珠这个不可靠的叙事人,让读者从叙事人的非历史性视角看到决定姐妹俩命运的历史力量。
