严复(1854—1921),原名宗光,字又陵,后改名复,字几道,福建侯官人。少年时期,严复考入福州船政学堂,接受广泛的自然科学教育。1877年到1879年,严复被公派到英国留学,进入格林尼次皇家海军学院(The Royal Naval College,Greenwich)学习。留学期间,严复涉猎了大量西方近代的学术理论,尤其是进化论观点。回国后先后在马尾船政学堂、北洋水师学堂任教,光绪十八年(1892)以“选用道员”四品衔,升为水师学堂总办。中日甲午战争后,严复完成了著名的

From 1877 to 1879, Yan Fu was sent to study in England and entered the Royal Naval College (Greenwich).
