天下万物随时间的推移而进化。正如斯宾塞所说:“世上的生活就是不停地逐步前进。”汉堡包味道更美,喷气式飞机更趋精良,人们的健康改善、寿命延长。语言教学也达到比以往任何时候都高的效率水平。只是有一件事却仍然停滞不前、那就是文学教学。为数众多的教师们以半个世纪前我们的祖父母一辈使用的方法在教授文学。我对我的文学课老师试图把思想观点强加于我的教授方式有着痛苦的记忆,对课堂内乏味的苦读仍然记忆犹新:一个个日期、一篇篇传记、以我所知无几的语言写的大段大段的文章、还有教师们对消极而不感兴趣的学生连续几小时的讲授。
