卢沟桥畔的战火硝烟,掀开了艰苦卓绝的全面抗战序幕。四万万中华儿女万众一心,奋起反抗。在这场关乎民族生死存亡的战争中,四川人民做出了巨大的贡献和牺牲。八年抗战,四川提供的财政粮赋占全国的三分之一,更有近300万川军奔向抗敌战场,勇赴国难,其中伤亡64万余人,参战人数之多,牺牲之惨烈,居全国之首。诚如1945年10月8日的《新华日报》社论《感谢四川人民》所说:“四川人民对于正面战场是尽了最大最重要责任。”
