鸽笼素描人称“北京的胡同,上海的弄堂”,这是指北京和上海不同的居民住房。弄堂房子是上海的特殊产儿。以前,在上海租界内以“里”命名的术板式弄堂住宅建筑,容易引起火灾,于是渐渐改为砖木结构,开始出现石库门里弄。这些房屋用石条砌门框,配以两扇中国传统的乌漆大门和铜门环,故被称为“石库门房子”,或者干脆叫“石库门”。如坐落在永嘉路291弄的慎成里,建于1928年,在当时法租界西爱咸斯路(今永嘉路)上,慎成里是最大的一条弄堂。弄内都是坐北朝南的三层老式石库门房子。有天井、客堂、亭
