OBJECTIVE: To determine the ratio of bacterial colonization of disposable hydrogel contact lenses and their care solution and to identify contaminated pathogens. Methods: According to the purpose of sampling cross-sectional study. 100 hydrogel contact lenses were collected from undergraduate student contact lens wearers at Sains University Health Campus in Malaysia. All lenses and care solution were sent to the microbiological culture and Gram stain. Results: Most of the study participants were female (98%). The average age was 21.36 ± 1.63 years old. Forty-one contact lenses (82%) showed positive bacterial colonization and positive bacterial colonization was found in 32% of the care solution. The most common pathogens are coagulase-negative Staphylococcus, Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus, while Pseudomonas and Serratia can be isolated more frequently in contact lenses. Conclusion: Contact lenses have the potential of causing bacterial colonization of lenses and fluids. It is advisable to take the maximum precautions in lens care and wearing and strictly observe hygienic practices.
