The recent Brighton Crop Protection Conference revealed that broadleaf weeds in cereal crops have become a popular target for the development of new herbicides. Ten new chemical structures were mentioned, of which six were broadleaf herbicides on cereals; three were narrow-leaved and sedge herbicides on cereal crops and one was probably a plant growth regulator. Of these new compounds, 4 are acetolactate synthase (ALS) inhibitors that inhibit the branched-chain amino acid biosynthesis and can affect cell division and growth.
