「书法是什么?」一直是书法界争论不体的热门话题,争论了这么多年也没有一个公认的结论。权威的工具书《辞海》这样释「书法」:指毛笔字书写的方法,主要讲执笔、用笔、点画、结构、分布(行次、章法)等方法。《中国美术辞典》释「书法」:「我国传统造型艺术之一,指用圆锥形的毛笔书写汉字(篆、隶、正、行、草)的法则。」都把书法视为毛笔写字的方法。至于各种艺术家、研究者下的定义更是五花八门。如:「书法艺术是通过文字的点画书写和字形结构去反映实事物的形体和动态美的。」
