一“扬州八怪”中的八位书画家,其命运大致相同,他们大都是出身于贫寒的知识分子家庭,多数自幼受过良好的文化熏陶和教养。郑燮出身于家世中落的仕宦之家。由于其幼小聪慧过人,不读死书而每诵书一篇必有独到之灼见。因此,他的书学诗文、绘画都自成一家。他秉性啸傲放达,决不因循苟且以投时好,更不愿“优游书史中”。因此,他屡为人忌,直到五十岁时才做了小小的范阳县令。郑板桥一生坎坷,生活中常年以愁穷相伴。他早年丧母,中年丧妻,晚年丧子。由于接踵而至的重创,使他无羁旷达的性格大受其挫。他是”愈愤怒,愈迫窘,愈敛厉,愈微细”。就是他的这些复杂情绪,决定了他的作品忽怒、忽怨、忽长啸、忽哀叹的情感表现。
