谢觉哉字焕南,别号觉斋,是湖南宁乡人。1905年,谢觉哉考中秀才。1918年至1919年受《新青年》和《湘江评论》等进步刊物影响,积极参加五四运动,创办县级地方刊物《宁乡旬刊》。1920年8月任《湖南通俗报》主编,该报辟有讲演、新闻、新知识、小批评、社会调查、谚语、新字课等栏目,以宣传民主科学及新民学会的政治主张为主要内容,抨击封建军阀的反动统治,对地方新文化教育和政治革新,起了积极的推动作用。谢觉哉
Xie Jue Zai word Huannan, alias Qiao fasting, Hunan Ning people. In 1905, Xie Juezai test scholar.
