This is a tough industry that can not be ignored. The tough times for the pillar industry 2012 is the catastrophic year for the global shipbuilding industry and a tragic year for the Korean shipbuilding industry. First, the two indicators of exports and orders are catching up with China. Second, exports have shown negative growth for the first time since 1999. In 2012, South Korean shipbuilding enterprises exported 37.8 billion U.S. dollars, down from 39.2 billion U.S. dollars. For eleven years, South Korea first gave up its position of export first. The KCCI issued a statement in March this year urging the government to expand its financing plan for the shipbuilding industry to support the sluggish Korean shipbuilding industry. The Korean Chamber of Commerce and Industry is the most influential association in South Korea. This is the first time that such a statement has been made.
