It is generally believed that modern guidance systems have better performance than classic proportional navigation systems. However, it can not always be assumed that such good performance is achieved by improving some of the costs of components and additional equipment. This article describes several aspects of performance, durability and ease of implementation of a modern guidance system (MGS) and a classic PN navigation system. Quantitative comparison of the first-order off-target distance shows that MGS has the smallest off-target distance if the part tolerances are satisfied. However, if the part tolerance or measurement error is reduced, the PN’s off-target distance is smaller than the MGS until the MGS characteristic decreases faster than PN over a significant part or measurement error.
