Recent author lab studies have shown that mast cells found from BAL have the morphological properties of mucosal mast cells. Most of these cells in the lung are located around the submucosa that conducts airways. The authors want to compare certain characteristics of mast cells that are obtained from BAL with disseminated lung tissue debris and with basophils. Mast cells are obtained from BAL and excised lung tissue fragments from non-asthmatic patients after digestion with collagenase and passage of blood basophils through dextran. Histamine release was measured by fluorescence spectroscopy. When stimulated with anti-human IgE, mast cells of basophils and BAL were released in a dose-dependent manner
