In June 1987, the Research Libraries Group, Inc. (RLG) proposed a plan to compile an “International Joint Directory of Good Books in Chinese” by means of computer input (ie, the Chinese RareBook Projecf (CHRB) project) . Founded in 1974 by Harvard, Yale, Columbia University and the New York Public Library, the RLG is comprised of mostly research universities and has its own Research Li-brary Network (RLIN). Focusing on the management and use of data in East Asia is a feature of RLG. RLG in March 1986 set up a Chinese rare book expert group, specializes in rare books related issues, after 15
