美国作家西奥多·德莱赛把细腻入情的笔触伸向物欲横流、信仰迷失的美国社会,直接暴露消费主义狂潮中美国上层社会的虚伪矫饰和腐化堕落,下层民众迂腐无知的怠惰之气更是随处可见。主人公克莱德走在繁华锦绣的欲望迷宫中,步步迷失、一路困顿,在虚设的炫耀、奢靡中将灵魂架空,并在徘徊困顿之间完成了人性的转变,他短暂的人生之路可叹又可怜、可悲更可思。本文中,笔者将从欲望化的身体、身份游移与角色焦虑以及权力网络中的同谋者这三个方面来探求《美国悲剧》中克莱德独特男性气质的成因以及他辗转困顿的悲剧人生。
