Psychological findings show that semantic transparency affects learners’ recognition of whole word meanings, but most of the research focuses on native speakers. We use Thai students as experimental subjects and investigate whether semantic transparency exists in the process of recognizing Chinese word whole words Experimental results show that the semantic transparency has little effect on Thai students’ learning Chinese vocabulary at the primary level, while the generalized morpheme awareness of Thai students at the intermediate level leads to high error rates of opaque words. We believe that the formation of the subject’s mother tongue determines whether the subjects have a sense of morpheme decomposition, which in turn determines the extent of semantic transparency.
