Washington: Earlier this year, the United States used lasers to destroy a high-speed anti-tank missiles. This is one of the encouraging milestones achieved by the Defense Department’s High-Energy Laser Program. The competent authorities for the trials were the Navy and the Advanced Research Projects Agency, which used chemical lasers from TRW. The test address is a test site for the company in southern California. The aiming tracking system was provided by Hughes Aircraft Corp. DoD officials did not believe laser weapons were superior to conventional weapons in spite of progress made by the laser, at least for the near future. It is for this reason that the Pentagon may not be able to formally develop a high-energy laser weapon system by the fiscal year of 1982.
