Toni Morrison’s story of “compassion” occurred in the late seventeenth century. She described the living conditions of people in a particular historical context through the perspective of a young girl, demonstrated the issue of segregation of race and expressed a lot of seemingly contradictions It also deals with such issues as religion, liberty, gender of men and women, combing the causes and development of these problems and future trends. Toni Morrison’s novels always focus on the disadvantaged groups in society, including blacks, women and children. In particular, Morrison’s concern in “compassion” is beyond the limits of race, Whites are also included in the focus, and the narrative background remains in the primitive society of slavery and racism, reflecting people’s awareness and grasp of their own destiny.
