In December 1912, Liu Haisu (1896-1944), a native of Changzhou, Jiangsu, founded the private art academy in Shanghai, the Shanghai Pictorial Art Institute. The founding of Shanghai Pictorial Art Academy broke the paradigm of normal education centered on model copy in western art education since the early 20th century and pushed the first professional art school in China to the stage of history.
