Intel was on the news again: last time because it was serious about using Symmetric Multiprocessor (SMP) systems as superservers - we’re talking about systems designed to compete with high-performance servers, 4 to 8-processor Pentium Pro system. Intel acquired Corollary, a company that designs and manufactures SMP chipsets and motherboards. This means that Intel and designers from Corollary will start designing new boards for the next generation of Intel chips, codenamed Deschutes. These will all be 8-processor systems. In the meantime, many of Intel’s big-time clients have already started their own designs. The next generation of Intel machines will also target upscale systems from IBM, Digital and Sun. Ironically, the operating system (Windows NT) of these systems is relatively slow.
