Nippon Steel Nagoya Plant has developed a secondary refining process called RH-PB. This process can simultaneously remove sulfur, hydrogen and phosphorus from molten steel. Demand for high-purity steels with low contents of nitrogen, oxygen, phosphorus, sulfur and hydrogen has soared in recent years, which requires that the secondary refining process must meet various requirements. The increase in process complexity is a hurdle to efforts to mass produce high-purity steels at low cost. The RH process originally used for degassing in steel can also be used for decarburization, dehydrogenation and composition control. The use of oxygen (OB) to heat molten steel as a supplement to the RH process facilitates the production of ultra-low carbon steel, while refining with flux increases desulfurization. Due to these developments and improvements, the RH vacuum degassing unit has made rapid progress as a versatile secondary refining unit. Nippon Steel Nagoya Plant has developed a new secondary refining process that complements the RH process with a powdering function (PB) called the RH-PB process. The flux powder is sprayed through an oxygen blowing nozzle located in the lower part of a conventional RH-OB vacuum chamber. This RH-PB process can be used for desulfurization, dephosphorization and vacuum degassing. The following describes the RH-PB process points and their results.
