I. Significant increase in economic efficiency and enhanced profitability From the major economic efficiency indicators of the top 500 enterprise groups in China in 2002, loss-making enterprises have substantially decreased. In 2001, there were 54 loss-making enterprises and in 2002, there were 33 companies. In 21 cases, the decline rate was 38.89%; before the year 2002, 500 enterprise groups realized a total profit of 358.932 billion yuan, and the total profits and taxes were 718.933 billion yuan, an increase of 29.91% over 2001, respectively.
