Objective: To investigate the nutritional status of VitC and VitE in patients with non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) and to explore the relationship between VitC, VitE and superoxide dismutase (SOD) and its clinical significance. Methods: The diet of 37 NIDDM inpatients was investigated. The levels of VitC, VitE and erythrocyte SOD in plasma were measured and their correlations were analyzed. Results: (1) The intake of VitC and VitE was sufficient, higher than the standard of RDA; (2) The levels of VitC and SOD in plasma were significantly decreased, while there was no significant change in plasma VitE; (3) There was a positive correlation between plasma VitE and SOD. CONCLUSIONS: In-hospital diabetic patients have VitC malnutrition, increased consumption of VitC and SOD, increased requirements and decreased antioxidant capacity. VitE helps to maintain SOD activity. VitC intake should be noted
