Both men and women, long-term abuse of alcohol, can lead to sexual dysfunction. Although there is no reliable statistical data to illustrate this issue, clinical observations show that about 50% of men and about 25% of women have sexual dysfunction among those with alcoholism. It has been reported that men with alcoholism have a higher percentage of sexual dysfunction with significant liver damage (from alcoholic hepatitis to advanced cirrhosis). (One study showed that 78% of men have impaired sexual function and sexual desire). Patients with chronic alcoholism in men, even ruled out the impact of age differences, also significantly showed loss of libido than before. About 40% of men with alcoholism have impotence, and about 5% to 10% have ejaculation disorders. Within a few months or years after alcohol withdrawal, only half of these cases return to normal. There is a big difference in the performance of sexual behavior and sexual function among women with alcoholism. Their sexual desire appears to be still intact compared with those of men with alcoholism, but this may also be reflected in the lack of sufficient information in discriminating between differences in participatory activity and true sexual desire. It has been reported that between 30% and 40% of women with alcoholism have difficulty in sexual excitement, about 15% have shown loss of orgasm, or significantly reduced the frequency or strength of orgasm.
