Sharp plans to develop 2/3-inch CCDs for EDTV and HDTV with 520,000, 700,000 and 1.4 megapixels between now and 1990. The company decided to make a CCD camera that had many advantages due to the dynamic target characteristics of the electron tube in the camera tube and its use in high-definition broadcasting. The 2/3-inch CCD with 520000 pixels is expected to hit the market in the spring of 1988. The company’s goal is to reduce the illumination to 10 lux (min) while using a monolithic color filter. The company expects to begin mass production of a 1/4-inch 400,000-pixel CCD by next spring.
