Introduction One of the technical problems that modern rubber co-workers often face is early cure, or scorch. One common solution is to use some retarder, that is, certain compounds that help suppress early sulfidation. Certain acids, anhydrides and nitrosamines have been used for this purpose, but the results are less satisfactory in many applications. Recently, some new types of retarders have been published, which are much superior to their predecessors, especially in the benzothiazole sulfenamide accelerator system. These new varieties can be classified as mercaptobenzothiazole (BTSH) trapping agents because they appear to mainly delay the effect of sulfidation.
