1979 to 1982 was marked by the continued expansion and development of seismology in the United States. In this paper we summarize some of the most important aspects of this period as a prelude to the more detailed literature below. These documents also include both theories of the processes of the Earth’s interior and improvements in various geophysical techniques used in the study. Perhaps the most traditional area of seismology is Earth’s internal structure, but modern seismology is moving in a very unconventional direction. Most prominently, important new information has been obtained on the lateral heterogeneity, anisotropy and scattering and absorption of media.
