Cryolite (Na 3 AlF 6) acts as a cosolvent in the production of aluminum. To date, the ore has been produced in Ivi-gtut, Greenland, with considerable output. Ore crushing and refining was carried out at a factory in Copenhagen, Denmark. In the past, workers exposed to icy stone had higher levels of fluorine and higher rates of skeletal fluorosis. Although no new cases of poisoning were found among cryolite-refined workers in the last 20 years, the concentrations currently exposed still slightly disturb the metabolism of inorganic salts in the body.
