GE, the U.S. General Electric Company, has developed an observational control system that allows automatic welders to weld along irregular welds. As the welder moves, it constantly observes welds and puddles and constantly adjusts. The company claims the unit offers up to 15 times higher productivity than the more popular automatic welders, and the welds are uniform and the quality of the welds is higher than that of a skilled welder. To be used with a tungsten inert gas shielded automatic welder, a tungsten electrode with a high current flow is moved closer to the work piece, where a high temperature arc is formed, melting the material, thereby merging the two parts together.
